About me
Tyra Jackson; currently a member of Phialdanco's D2 under the instruction of Donald Lunsford, Tyra is a Native of Mobile Alabama a Graduate from W.P. Davidson High School and The University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Dance along with a Minor in Communication. Tyra received her early training form the Award winning Sheffield School of the Dance in its Tillmans Corner location. She has created and presented choreographic works in the 43 annual Philadelphia Dance Company Concert Danco on Danco as well as The Alabama Dance Festival and the University of Alabama's Dance Alabama (2007-2011). She was also a solo finalist in the 2011 National Society of Arts and Letters Choreography Competition. Tyra was chosen to work with Robert Battle; current Artistic Director of Alvin Ailey American Dance theatre, in his choreographers lab held in Birmingham AL in 2009. She is also the 2010 recipient of the Edie Barnes Award for choreography and was stated as the "Rinsing Star" in the 2009 issue of the SYNROCITY online magazine. She has served as the Modern/Ballet instructor for the pre-professional program at Dance Institute of Washington as well as a classroom dance teacher at William E. Doar Jr. Public Charter School for the Performing Arts in the Nations Capitol.She teaches dance to be used as a tool to focus on a sound mind, body, and spirit. Tyra feels that dance is a safe and healthy way for individuals to face and overcome any and all obstacles. She believes that in order to move forward, we must reach back and teach those behind us the knowledge we have received.
